There are world explorers, border-crossers, adventurers, the inspired curious, collectors, and creative trailblazers and spell-breakers; theseare the focus of the HEINRICH SCHÜTZ MUSIC FESTIVAL 2016. The Sagittarius undoubtedly belongs to this kind. When he left for Italy for the first time, he was by his own account “a young and curious man, ready to take on the world” – he was someone who appreciated the “usefulness / of the beholding of far-away lands”.

The question arises ofwhat Schütz and his contemporaries could have known about the ‘world’. This question consistently leads us to incredulously-received travelogues such as that of Marco Polo, to the books of a universally educated musician such as Athanasius Kircher, or astounds us when we confront the subversive world models of scientists such as Galileo Galilei. And all of these paths into small and large worlds point to the maps and globes of Gerhard Mercator – as they ultimately still do nowadays.
But it’s not only the maps, telescopes, and encyclopedias that are the media of world improvement, but also manuscript paper and musical instruments. Through experiencing the ways of thinking and acting of composers and musicians, and through melodies, chords, and rhythms, we are capable of entering into fascinating worlds, entire lands, regions, and inner soulscapes that await being discovered by us.

Let us, then, discover these old and new worlds! – The richness of ideas and the unique sound history of Central Germany are ideal breeding grounds for the HEINRICH SCHÜTZ MUSIC FESTIVAL 2016, a festival that spans almost the entire world.
Stay curious!

Yours, Dr. Christina Siegfried
